Mountain Search And Rescue STN-SAR:

With our expertise in GSM communication networks, Stratign has designed a comprehensive and customized solution STN-SAR for Mountain Search and Rescue operations even in the most remote terrain and demanding weather conditions.

The System generates a private GSM network, connects with target’s cellphone and activates the transmission process. The Rescue team can then locate the source of the signal using a directional finders. None of the functions requires presence of the GSM network of any carrier within the range of the search and rescue operations.

The system does not interfere with the network of the local provider

The STN-SAR is primarily designed for

Mountain search and rescue.
Search and rescue in areas with low GSM network coverage.
Search and Rescue after occurrence of a natural disaster.
Technology

The system uses advanced GSM tracking technology in order to locate the signal transmitted by mobile phones. It has been created specifically for search and rescue agencies that frequently operate in extreme environmental conditions. Solid construction of the system guarantees large degree of shock resistance and waterproof shell protects it from adverse weather conditions such as rain, ash or excess humidity.

Modes of Operation

STN-SAR offers two modes of operation

Random interception mode: Allows search of all mobile phones in the area specified by the operator from 10 up to 1000m.
Target mode: Enables search of previously defined mobile phones.
Random Interception Mode

This mode allows search of all mobile phones in the area specified by the operator from 10 up to 1000m. The system generates a local GSM network. The coverage range of this network can be previously specified form 10m up to 1000m. The system then scans the specified range for cellphones. The available cellphones in the ranged is logged on to the system. The operator can then activate transmission to these cellphones. These transmissions can then be tracked using direction finders provided with the system.

Target mode

This mode enables search of previously defined mobile phones. The operator enters the ID data of target mobile phones into the system. The system generates a local GSM network. The coverage range of this network can be previously specified form 10m up to 1000m. The system then scans the specified range for cellphones ID’s previously entered by the operator. The available cellphones in the range is logged on to the system. The operator can then activate transmission to these cellphones. These transmissions can then be tracked using direction finders provided with the system.

Possible Operating Scenario

Scenario 1

PROBLEM: Avalanche occurred near to popular hiking trail.

Mountain Search and rescue team requires fast and safe way to check whether there are people in the area that potentially need help.

APPLICATION OF STN-SAR:

STEP 1: After arriving in the area the system can be used in random interception mode to detect phones in range from 10 up to 1000m

STEP 2: System registers every phone in its range and displays their list on the Panasonic Toughbook computer

STEP 3: System operator can send a text message to each cell phone in the area stating that search is currently in progress and provide guide on how to contact the search team via the private GSM network created by the system

STEP 4: Operator may then make a voice call to selected number and activate the transmission process in selected phones

STEP 5: Rescue team can then locate the source of the transmission using directional finders

Scenario 2

PROBLEM: Search and rescue agency has received a call about a group of people who went missing in a national park, rescue team only knows approximate area where they are likely to be and GSM coverage is very low.

The search area suggested by the carrier is very large and contact with the missing group is impossible due to low GSM coverage.

APPLICATION OF STN-SAR:

STEP 1: Phone number (MSISDN) or IMSI/IMEI identification numbers of the people who were reported missing are entered into the system

STEP 2: In order to quickly locate them rescue team decides to use a helicopter

STEP 3: STN-SAR system, when used in target mode, during the flight around the area will only permit registration of phones from the target list

STEP 4: Once any of the phones from the list registers in the system, transmission process in the phone will be activated

STEP 5: Rescue team can then locate the source of transmission using directional finders

Scenario 3

PROBLEM: Natural disaster response team arrives in a terrain where hurricane/ earthquake/ flood has occurred in order to locate anyone who is still in the area

Many people who are still in the region where the natural disaster has occurred are conscious, however cannot establish contact with the rescue team due to lack of GSM network. Low visibility limits rescue teams ability to assess the amount of people who remained in the area and to locate them.

APPLICATION OF STN-SAR:

STEP 1: Durable construction of the system allows it the rescue team to operate it from any vehicle – boat/car/quad/helicopter

STEP 2: System registers every phone in its range and displays their list on the Panasonic Toughbook computer

STEP 3: System operator can send a text message to each cell phone in the area disclosing that search is currently in progress and provide guide on how to contact the search team via the private GSM network created by the system

STEP 4: Rescue team can attempt to call mobile phones in the area via the network created by the system, and gather information on their location

STEP 5: If the communication fails, operator of the system can activate the transmission process in one of the phones and rescue team can trace the source of the transmission using directional finders
